We have some happy and sad news from the Learning Pod. Mrs Enright has replaced Mr Cameron who has retired and is now teaching 5/6C. Mrs Enright and I have become used to each others' idiosyncrasies over the years, so I will miss my Learning Pod buddy (although I might be happy to see some of her stuff go ;-) ). However, we say a big welcome to Mr Ryan. Mr Ryan will be taking Mrs Enright's morning synthetic phonics groups as well as doing some release for our classroom teachers. Mr Ryan is a calm, friendly person and teacher and it is a pleasure to have him part of our team.

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've posted, but there is still lots of exciting stuff happening at Broulee Public School. The school has been busy implementing synthetic phonics, and more photos will follow. The purpose of this update is to fill you in on our school numeracy programs. The Learning Support Program allows the school School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) to assist with numeracy groups in classrooms. This means that there are many classes in the school that have assistance during numeracy lessons. As most classes do numeracy rotations with small groups, this means that the classroom teacher and SLSOs work with small groups of children to give extra support and intervention. Here are some photos of the small group work that happens. Mra Tuan, Gabbie and Jasmine. Miss Hanks and Emma enjoying the shade of a beautiful tree while learning about friends of ten. In 4/5D students were broken into groups to make a slide show about multiplication and division. Follow the link below to see the "Puppet" that Rhiana and Summer made.
http://get-puppet.com/v/P_ZSLtRzcxU?autoplay=true Here are some photos from the various synthetic phonics programs we have happening around the school. There are some photos from MiniLit as well as photos from synthetic phonics group work happening in classes. Students are practising blending and segmenting phonemes (a letter or group of letters that represent a sound) for reading and spelling as well as handwriting and lessons on phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
There are lots of exciting changes happening in the Learning Pod and throughout the school. At the end of last year Broulee Public School staff began training in teaching synthetic phonics. In recent years studies have shown the importance of teaching phonics and synthetic phonics has emerged as the best way to teach students to read. Here at Broulee we are delivering synthetic phonics in several ways, in whole class programs and small group programs like MiniLit and Learning Support phonics programs. We have begun using decodable readers which assist children with learning to decode (sound out) words. We will keep in touch throughout the year with lots of pictures and stories from our various phonics programs.Hi all. Here in the Learning Pod we like to take opportunities to reinforce that reading is fun. Mr McDonald took a group of boys from Mr Rutter's class. They each followed an artisan bread recipe to make the dough and then shape the bread. Each student had to halve the dough recipe and took their bread home. It looked and tasted good. With years 3 and 4 away on the Woolongong excursion we have taken the opportunity to do a bit of cooking with our MultiLit kids. As it can take a bit of time, and we always seem to be rushing from student to student, it was nice to slow down and spend a bit more time with our students. Cooking is a great activity. Students learn new vocabulary (like desiccated) and comprehension is essential in order to complete the steps. Lots of maths skills are also used in cooking.
To be consistent with the language being used in years 5 and 6 we had three success criteria and a learning intention. The success criteria were:
I have added some photos to show you what a great job they did. Unfortunately, the kids prefer to take their creations home rather than give them to the teachers! I'm told they tasted good! Our Reading Recovery students have been doing some wonderful writing and because of this have been sent to the Principal... for a sticker! Here are some photos Mack, Brendan and Flynn them with their writing and their Principal's stickers.
We are excited about the upcoming technology conference. Teachers from different schools will be visiting our school next Thursday to look at how we use technology at Broulee Public School. The Learning Pod has some wonderful students set to show teachers how we use technology to support literacy. Matt, Maddie and Brena from 5D will be showing teachers how to use Phonics Hero to teach students how to learn to read and spell phonemes, as well as showing iPad apps to teach students how to read and spell sight words. Billy and Koray from 6R are ready to show a variety of engaging websites that teach children to comprehend what they are reading. Jasmine from 3T will be available to show teachers what apps can be used with MiniLit and MultiLit. We will be back next week with plenty of photos!
It has been an extremely busy year in our room. We have had lots of children come and go. As they need help to start with and then they achieved their literacy goals and left us. That means that the children are receiving the right support for their areas of need. All the teachers and the SLSO's are proud to be a part of helping all children that come to our room achieve and make them feel good about themselves.
The Learning Pod has moved to the Special Programs Room in the Year 5 / 6 block. A bit like the Tardis, we may look like a cupboard (okay not a telephone box) on the outside, but inside we have space. Cherie Enright, Tania Dorney, Tim McDonald and Mel Tuan teach inside the Learning Pod. Pauline Pay and Sharon Hanks teach MiniLit in the withdrawal rooms between Year 1 and Year 2.
In the Learning Pod Cherie Enright teaches Reading Recovery, Tim McDonald and Mel Tuan teach MultiLit and Tania Dorney teaches reading using the Get Reading Right program. If your child is participating in one of these programs, you are welcome to drop in and see us. We are always happy to organise for parents to spend time with us and check out the programs we do with your children. |
